Lord Byron, who recognised beauty when he saw it, described Sintra as ‘aglorious Eden’ containing ‘beauties of every description'.Travel to the wooded hills of the Serra Mountains, just 25 km (16 miles)northwest of Lisbon to uncover the idyllic charms of Sintra, with its fairy-talelandscape of mist-soaked forests, turreted palaces and castle ruins, Lying inthe wooded hills of the Serra Mountains. For centuries Portugal’s royalty madeSintra their retreat, building glorious palaces and shady gardens where thefresh mountain area provided a welcome respite from the torrid temperaturesof the city.Recognised by UNESCO as a cultural landscape, it is a true treat to the senses, nestling into the rippling mountains, amidst lush forests studded withromanticist architecture, from Moorish palaces to medieval castles and statelyhomes, with the sweet scents of pine and eucalyptus wafting gently on theAtlantic breeze. Make a first stop at the Pena Palace, built in 1854 by the flamboyant FernandoII as a romantic getaway, seen by its lavish architectural style including theexuberantly embellishments of golden onion domes and pink and yellowtowers and turrets.Descending to the Old Town Quinta da Regaleira, once owned by a fabulouslywealthy Portuguese businessman who hired of an Italian opera set designer tomake his very own palatial extravaganza, with a facade of towers and turretscarved with mythological creatures. But it’s the gardens which truly captivewith footpaths which caterpillar around willows and ferns, full-blossomedcamellias and drooping wisteria, statues of lions and dreamy nymphs, hiddenfollies, grottoes, gentle fountains and water-lilied lakes. But, thank heavens, the presence of suchhigh profile visitors has not altered the village’s downbeat, back-to-nature vibe. A setting like none other – set on a fertile strip of the Alentejo coach, it’sthatched houses sit alongside verdant green ride paddies which blend intomiles of sand dunes and a dramatic sea. Despite being the largestregion in Portugal, it receives nowhere near as much attention as the Algarve,Lisbon and Porto which also means its natural beauty and human heritagehave remained intact. This is the ideal place to escape the crowds – it accounts for almost a third ofPortugal’s total land area but less than 10% of the country’s total population. It’s a region which enjoys its own distinct cultural identity, visible where-everyou look – from the architecture which dots the rolling hillsides and dry, golden plains to the deliciously simple cuisine… A land of splendid sandybeaches – more alluring for being almost deserted, crystalline clear bluewaters, sun-drenched dunes and in contrast to the coastal panorama, theinterior dominated by what seem to be never-ending ochre-coloured plainsfilled with the typical Alentejo cork oaks interspersed bright green vineyards. It is also home to the oldest equestrian stud farms in the world, created I 1748by King John V of Portugal to preserve the majestic pure-breed Lusitanohorses. The Lusitano horse is the direct descendant of the Iberian horse, theforebearer of all horses that were at the root of equitation throughout theworld, from Europe to North Africa, from Asia Minor to India and China. Thanksto the isolation of this part of Europe, this extraordinary horse survived hereand evolved over a period of about fifteen thousand years. It is the oldestsaddle horse in the world and in addition to the Arabian Horse and thePurebred English, one of the three purebred breeds in the world.Located about 2 hours from Lisbon, this equine resort is the perfect place toget to know more about the breed, with opportunities interact with the horsesby riding or just stroking their magnificent coats.
